Edward I Silver Penny Class 1C

£1.00

Silver Penny of Edward I (Class 1C, 1279–1281)
Struck during the early years of Edward I’s reign, this fine silver penny marks the beginning of England’s great medieval recoinage. Class 1C issues are among the first of the reformed series minted after decades of debased coinage under Henry III. They feature the distinctive forward-facing crowned portrait of Edward I and a long cross reverse dividing the legend into quadrants — a design intended to deter clipping. These early issues are prized for their sharp Gothic lettering and elegant portrait style, capturing the transition to the high-medieval English penny that would dominate for over a century.

Minted in London, the coin was found by Lone Wolf Detecting in North Norfolk.

Edward I (Reigned 1272–1307)
Known as “Edward Longshanks” for his tall stature and “Hammer of the Scots” for his relentless campaigns north of the border, Edward I was one of medieval England’s most formidable monarchs. A skilled administrator as well as a warrior king, he reformed the legal system, strengthened royal authority, and oversaw a complete recoinage that restored confidence in England’s silver currency. His reign saw the construction of some of Britain’s greatest castles — including Caernarfon, Conwy, and Harlech — as symbols of English dominance in Wales. Despite his harshness, Edward laid much of the groundwork for the centralised monarchy that would define late medieval England.
