Constantine II, the eldest son of Constantine the Great, had strong ties to Britain. Born around AD 316 in Arles, he was proclaimed Caesar in York (Eboracum) in 317 AD, just as his father had been elevated to emperor there a decade earlier. As a young ruler, Constantine II governed Britain, Gaul, and Spain, commanding the legions that defended the northern frontier and maintained Rome’s power across the Channel. His reign marked one of the last periods when Roman Britain remained firmly within the imperial fold, before the empire’s slow retreat from the island.
